Based on the press statement released by his special Adviser on media, Femi Adelina, the man is extending his medical leave to enable him complete some series of test and will wait for the results. This was based on the advice of his medical team. He has since addressed a letter to both chambers of NASS on the extension. When the special Adviser was further asked on when the president will return, he said that was not disclosed to him.
Kai kai in the next few hours we shall be inundated with all kinds of stories with screaming headlines such as Mr president is paralyzed, Mr president doesn’t recognize people, Mr president has some mental disequilibrium, Mr president cannot seat for one hour etc etc.
I’m pretty sure the president is not doing badly health wise, but he still has serious health challenge that is likely to slow down his performance which is almost comatose. There are serious issues that require immediate attention of Mr president and if not handled immediately will further compound our socio economic woes.
Since mr president has already empowered the VP, let it not be in name, but with all executive powers. Being aware that there is a kitchen cabinet that vet or veto some decisions of Mr president, I’m suggesting that for the good of this country just as it happened in dying days of Late Umaru Yaradua when there was coalition of forces from NASS, political parties, pressure groups and even President Buhari was part of the forces that insisted that the constitution must be followed in empowering Goodluck Jonathan to act as president, this coalition must be revived in order to put sustained pressures on the kitchen cabinet to do the needful. This time around we must give kudos Mr president who each time he travelled, on working or medical leave, he always handed over to the VP, but whether the kitchen cabinet of Mr president that have held for most of the ills of this regime, especially those bordering on corruption and lopsidedness in appointments, will allow the VP do his job unfettered is a different ball game. In fact based on their antecedents, they will frustrate any move for the VP to do the needful.
Taking in to consideration the parlous state of the economy and slow pace of this regime on couple of national issues pending, it is very imperative for drastic measures be taken to stop the drift of the state.
Consequently, I’m calling on a powerful committee be constituted, comprising of the leadership of the National Assembly, eminent and well respected elder statesmen from all backgrounds be it military, business community, traditional rulers for them to travel to London and confront Mr president with concern of the Nigerians on some of these burning issues and for the VP to be empowered to take decisions on them and ensure their effective and efficient execution.
There is tension and apprehension in the polity on the indecision to appoint the new CJN. The tension is unnecessary and the president should immediately send the name of the acting CJN to the senate for confirmation before 10th of February 2017 when his acting mandate will lapse.
Our currency has been over devalued because of flip flop monetary policy of the CBN and the seeming corruption in the handling of the foreign exchange market. Consequently, the Gov of the bank be suspended immediately and the new man should work to revive the Naira and ensure the two markets are merged.
The president has to give the go ahead for a very strong economic team, comprising of economists, intellectuals, captains of industry and commerce, experienced technocrats etc be constituted to provide short and long term solutions for parlous state of our economy.
Cutting down the cost of governance by putting in place austerity measures, plugging leakages and wastage.
The much mouthed diversification of the economy should be in the front burner. Agriculture and solid minerals with inexhaustible potentials be explored and exploited immediately. Others sources of revenue be pursued vigorously.
Reorganization of his cabinet is long overdue as the cabinet is the most ineffective in history of governance in the country as is peopled by very incompetent and unserious people. Concerted efforts be made to get the best experienced brains in the country which could be found amongst the politicians, the academics, the business community etc.
