I was seriously impressed and utterly flabbergasted at the rising popularity and philanthropic gesture of the Honourable Commissioner for Works, Barr Lilian Stephen. This became eminent during the build-up to the Sallah celebration and on sallah day when the Honourable Commissioner spoke to the hearts of the people of Ganye Local Government Area.
It is clear that long time experience in office has groomed the iron lady now popularly called Mama Chiefdom by her people and has taught her how to speak the grammar of the common man and so she indelibly imprinted her love and popularity in their hearts including mine.
This is a woman who, as shown in the picture below proves to her people to be the hardworking and performing Commissioner in the administration of Governor Bindow and now back home for Sallah, she was quick in identifying what went wrong during her absence and hurriedly put in her best to put smiles on the faces of those who could not have gotten it so sweet during the Sallah celebration.
Although a devoted Christian, Barr Lillian took the Sallah celebration personal when she ensured that food items, clothes and some token to match went round and that’s the main reason for my take on her this morning. She was the only office holder the people of Ganye first saw while some sneaked in on the sallah day and sneaked out just like the Hausa proverb that says “Shigan shantun kadangare”. Curiosity they say kills a cat. The people are curious to know why and they are wondering if this is the sak philosophy Baba Buhari taught them.
I should be honest and bold enough to add here that no office holder in Ganye does it better and this is a fact we must all admit. If her efforts were complimented, we would have all been better off than the situation some of us celebrate Sallah in. I learnt from her leadership style that if a leader makes himself accessible to his or her people, he or she stands the chance of having it easy with the people and the opposite is also true. Thank you for touching the lives of the common man Mama Chiefdom.
