Political activities ahead of 2019 promise to be full of surprises in Adamawa State. Before last week’s gale of defections in the National Assembly, the APC was in firm control of the state. The APC had the state government apparatus, the support of former Vice President Atiku’ and the backing of former Governor Murtala Nyako. The party was also in the good books of a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal. The three blocs headed by Nyako, Atiku, and Babachir Lawal were in control of the affairs of the ruling party in Adamawa until the decamping of Atiku to the PDP,.
And Atiku, until his dumping of APC, was the political godfather of Governor Mohammed Jibrilla Bindow. Blindow had once publicity confessed that his loyalty to Atiku then had reasons. According to him, the moment he won the APC primary ahead of the 2015 general elections, it was only the former vice president who funded his campaign to the tune of N500 million. If he is loyal to such a person, it is not out of place, the governor declared.
Bindow came into the 2015 governorship race on the political structure of Nyako and won the election. Then Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, one of the parties which came together to form the APC, also contributed to the success of the governor at the polls. The CPC, headed by Ibrahim Waziri, later transformed to Buhari Support Group, BSG, with large supporters.
Now, Atiku and Nyako and their allies have left the APC. The former VP has formally pitched the tent with the opposition PDP while Nyako is yet to declare for another party, but his son, Senator Abdulaziz Nyako, has declared for the Advanced Democratic Congress, ADC. With these powerful blocs dumping the APC for the PDP, the ruling party in Adamawa has a big hurdle to cross in the run-up to the 2019 elections in the state.
And the ruling government is already jittery. But as the government in power with huge resources at its disposal, the APC can surmount the unfolding scenario with its array of supporters.
And in its favor is the giant strides it has recorded especially in road construction, education, and health sectors. These achievements have given Yola, the state capital, a facelift as well as some major towns in the state.
This might greatly help APC to come back to power in 2019.
