On Saturday, it must have been meant to be a simple wedding. One
young man and his lady. Just enough. What could not be afforded was not
used. In a simple non air-conditioned tokumbo golf car was the groom and
his bride, little bride and the page boy. Guests trekked along from
Church down a dusty laterite street in Jambutu, Yola.
Onlookers may have laughed at such a nondescript wedding given the
costly flamboyance of other weddings on this Saturday. But not God.
The procession tried to make way for a passing convoy of 3 SUVs which
turned out to be Governor Mohammed Umaru Jibrilla on inspection of a
network of roads in the hitherto closed enclave of Jambutu in Yola where
ordinary folk reside in hundreds of thousands. Jambutu alone has nearly
15 kilometres of 34 roads that the State Government embarked upon in
the last 6 months, and progressing steadily.
stopped and hailed the groom, apologising for the small hitch on this
most important day of the young man’s life. He blessed the couple and
the groom insisted on a request for a photograph. See where and to whom
God sent the grace of an encounter with the Number 1 citizen of Adamawa
State. I was there – and sincerely more excited than the young groom and
his bride. I knew some ongoing BIG weddings that were more elaborately
planned. Yet. God is awesome!
