These are some of the issues I want us to critically examine as Trump’s presidency unfolds
Making America great again.
” For too long a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost. Washington flourished but the people did not share in its wealth…..The wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes and then redistributed across the entire world… we must protect our borders from ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies and destroying our jobs ( culled from Trump’s inauguration speech).“
If there is anybody in America that suits this narrative then it’s Trump himself. This is a man that makes billions from the system and yet he has consistently failed to pay taxes for about two decades. This is height of hypocrisy and dishonesty. In fact it borders on criminality because the millions of tax payers money has been used to provide infrastructures and social amenities which president Trump has, unashamedly and without conscience, been using without contributing anything. On issue of companies must invest jobs in America, the biggest culprit of this is Trump himself as he has been exporting jobs more outside the country than within. His businesses are done with 144 companies in 25 countries in Asia, Europe, South America and Africa particularly South Africa. Despite his Islamophobia , Trump has a lot of businesses in core Muslims countries of Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Indonesia, UAE Such as golf courses in UAE, a huge Trump tower in Istanbul, luxury hotels in Indonesia. His rhetoric of banning Muslims from entering America can only make sense to gullible Americans and Nigerians.
On disparaging other American leaders
Trump, during the electioneering campaign and even after being sworn in, had lampooned American leaders before him for having failed the American people with their penchant for subverting the interest of the American people. If he had restricted this criticism to his co travelers in the Republican Party it would have been understandable. But I have evidence of two American president that did a lot to their people that it will require a more intelligent and composed Trump to surpass their record.
Bill Clinton inherited a debt of $11 trillion from republic president of George H W Bush senior but through deft economic engineering he wiped out the debt and left the presidency with a credit balance of $5 trillion. He created 22m jobs.He had one of the greatest economic growth in American history as the economy grew by 35%. The robust economy left by Clinton was all wiped away by George W Bush JR who in 8 years took the American economy in to depression for the second time after the first experience in in 1929- 1939. The surplus credit of $11 trillion Clinton was wiped out and incurred another national debt of $5.849 trillion. Obama took America out recession, created 10.9m jobs, manufacturing factories started booming again. The economy grew bigger by 16% and unemployment dropped 9 year low to 4.6%. Comparatively it has been proven that in the past 40 years, the democrats outperformed their republican counterpart in White House. I enjoined Trump apologists to please advise him to acknowledge the performance of others before him and wait for the verdict history of on his own.
On Triumph Islamophobia vis a vis stark economic and military realities
I have said so much on Trump business interest in core Islamic countries which makes his rhetoric on dealing with Muslims balderdash. The economic activities of some of these core Muslims country and that of America are so interwoven that the Muslims world and America need each other. Saudi Arabia is the 10th largest trading partner of America and as at 2014, the trade between the two countries was worth $71b. Saudi Arabia investment in USA is worth $750m. UAE trade with US is worth $25b. The trade partnership between Indonesia and America, the largest Muslim country in the world With 250m people is $922b. The $150b of the frozen cash of Libya are stashed in three countries which are US, England and Germany. These and more facts which are not added here make a mockery of Trump vow to ban Muslims in US. It can only appeal to people that are ignorant of hard facts on the economic realities on the ground.
Trump vowed to wipe out terrorism on the surface of the earth. How will he do it without cooperation from friendly Muslim countries. He needs military bases inside Middle East. The recent decapitating of ISIS was made possible with the support of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Jordan. How can he get the support of these Muslims when you have promised the American people that you are banning all Muslims from entering America. Folks some people are just being taken for a ride. Shine your eyes!
Trump has vowed that undocumented immigrants will be deported. They are 11m and Africa has a couple of millions. Already Trump is placing restriction on immigrants. A lot of influx of immigrants in US are from Nigeria, especially from the Eastern part of Nigeria and here are agitators for Biafra celebrating Trump. Somebody who says he knows only America. Even long term allies like UK are being relegated to the background and here is the man that hates our colour and that we are more of liability, yet we like ignoramuses are celebrating him. We are waiting to see how Trump will support Biafra’s cause with US hard earned money!
Forget about his part of speech that says.. ” whether we are black or brown or white, we all bleed the same red blood of patriots.” Trump is not about inclusiveness but it’s about exclusiveness. A government of white billionaires by the billionaires and for the billionaires. The critical key positions are being held by white money bags. Only one black in the cabinet and no Latino. Where is the government of American people? Nobody that opposed him is holding any position, even in the core Republican Party not to talk of democrats. Obama ensured that his government was inclusive. In his first term, he even retained Bush’s Secretary of State. All in all he appointed three republican as secretaries. Clinton appointed a lot of minorities in top government positions. Trump exclusiveness will be counter productive in the long run because the much desired United front to face the monumental problems of governance will be a mirage.
With these contradictions, hypocrisies, deceptions, the America people will sooner or later realize that they have been taken for a big ride.To my Nigerian brothers that are over celebrating Trump they will also very soon realize that it’s easy for Trump to implement his anti Africa rhetoric because sending the undocumented immigrants and tighter control on immigrants is no big deal and that will compound our unemployment woes.
Please my brothers and sisters there is nothing to celebrate in Trump’s presidency because we don’t matter in his political equation. Just like he is saying America first, let us always say Nigeria first and we can do it by jettisoning ethnic and religious sentiments that have divided us and thereby making it easy for our maximum rulers to pauperize, exploit and dehumanize us. Together we are stronger and with this unity we can hold our leaders accountable and compel them to do the needful ie bringing about the desired socio- economic development.
