Africa’s richest business mogul, Aliko Dangote, has donated ten block hostels to prestigious higher institution in the country, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU).
This was disclosed by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Ibrahim Garba yesterday during a courtesy visit he paid to a renowned media outlet in Abuja.
Garba lamented on how the university has not had enough hostels to accommodate students for the past 45 years and revealed that the new development in the institution was courtesy of Dangote who promised to build new hostels for the varsity when he attended the school’s convocation about two years ago.
“Alhaji Aliko Dangote came to our convocation in 2016 and promised to build 10-block of hostels as I am speaking to you now they are 100 per cent completed. These hostels will accommodate about 2,000 students in what we call ABU phase 2 site. In the last 45 years ABU has never built a single hostel. There has never been a new hostel.” He said.
The vice chancellor while commenting on why the institution did not get new hostels for over four decades, disclosed that it was the military Government policy that barred universities from building additional hostels in order to avoid protest by students.

“Lecturers are always inadequate but that is not what is disturbing us. What is disturbing us is the fact that within this inadequacy government now creates new universities and you don’t create lectures.”
