We are living on tenterhooks. These are trying times as the country is not only facing hunger, want and underdevelopment, but the most critical element in a happy society is peace which has eluded us for more than 10 years. There is no part of the Nation that is not experiencing violence, culminating in to death. The South West that enjoys relative peace have had their violent clashes with herdsmen resulting to the death. If the South West have minimum casualties from communal clashes, they have been recording casualties on Lagos- Ibadan expresses road. From March- may this year, about 60 people lost their lives on that road. In North East, we have our own share of Boko Haram that has been devastating in three states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe. Based on official statistics this mayhem has claimed about 25 thousands lives, with properties running into hundreds of billions of Naira destroyed. Adamawa state has combined honours, ravaged by BH and the menace of herdsmen. Taraba is the headquarters of farmers/ herdsmen war in the entire North because of the large number of communities involved, the high rate of of the death and destruction recorded. In the North Central States, the mentioning of the herdsmen is the beginning of wisdom as plateau, Benue are facing unprecedented war between the herders and the farmers which has become very frightening and devastating. In Nasarawa state, the situation is complicated. We have the Eggon Militia with other nationalities. We also have the tivs and herdsmen. In Kogi, there are pockets of clashes between the Igalas and the herdsmen.
In the North West, the people of Southern Kaduna are involved in very frightening war with the herdsmen. In Birnin Gwari, Kaduna state, armed banditry has become a way of life for the people of the area. Zamfara state has become the headquarters of cattle rustling in the North leading to several loss of lives and properties. In fact the bandits in Birnin Gwari and Zamfara state have become law on their own as they perpetrate their heinous crimes without being challenged by security forces. Sokoto a relatively peaceful state had the taste of the heinous behaviour of these bandits when more than 30 innocent souls were murdered in cold blood recently.
In the Southern part of Nigeria, the story of violence, death and lost of lives and properties have been on the rise. The relative peace enjoyed in Niger Delta is being threatened by the militants themselves who have given a signal that they may soon resume hostilities if the herdsmen menace is not checkmated.
With the violence that has engulfed the nation, we are expecting all our prominent citizens to find an amicable trajectory to this mayhem, but instead of that the various elites have resorted to stoking the flame by going their separate ways with each group of elites supporting the narrow perspectives of their nationalities, beating the drum of war which in the long run could be very catastrophic to all of us and all of us shall be worse of with this irredentists approach.
It’s my humble opinion we can stem tide of the disaster that awaits us if we take some appropriate steps which could be summarized thus.
Let us temporarily suspend politics. The president should ban all political activities for the next few months. All party primaries be shifted to November- December 2018.
The president should call all leaders of various nationalities, including all top government officials in the three tiers of government, including legislators for a submit to brain storm on the way forward.
All those that are directly or indirectly linked with these violence must be apprehended and dealt with.
Proactive security measures must be put in place to forestall violence. Such proactive security measures include introducing state of the art equipment to track criminals. Police at check point conducting manual security is totally unacceptable. The welfare of security men must be given top priority. A situation where a police man could be without salary for six months is to me criminal.
Overhauling those manning security at the top is long overdue. All hands must be on deck to get competent, experienced hands to replace them and the new men at the helm of the affairs must be given a template of their assignments. Failure to live up to expectations will attract removal. Experts on security both retired and on active service must be engaged to find a way out. I have watched on two different occasions one retired capt Aliyu on channels television, who has put across security tips if adhered to will go a long way in finding lasting solutions to issues at hand.
All these suggestions will pale to insignificance if the political will is lacking and if our citizens do not eschew bitterness, hatred, belligerence, altercation, ethno religious bigotry and embrace forgiveness, reconciliation, dialogue, fair mindedness, social justice, political sagacity and above all the fear of God.Do you ever witness news, videos, articles, or photos that you believe it's good and rich for our blog?, or do you have a true life story that you would want us to feature on our blog; Adamawa Celebrities News?
