Why Nigerian Universities Can't Be World Best

A lot of times the thought of why Nigerian Universities can't be best or one of the best in the world Ranking keeps running on my brain.

I recently got to know the reasons and I will judge it based on my institution.

I graduated from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, (2017). Despite all the glory and names Ahmadu Bello University has in Africa, it has gone nowhere in the world ranking. Nigerian Universities cannot be among the best universities in the world ranking because no university can operate Oxford standard with N20,000 per Annum as tuition fee.

However, on the prospects and challenges of Ahmadu Bello University one can identify lack of Adequate funding as the major challenge of ABU and other universities in Nigeria. Come to think of it if Nigerian universities must produce graduates equal to those of Oxford, the government must be ready to fund it or be bold enough to ask students to pay, because funds have to be enough.

For instance, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria spends N50 million monthly on power, and government does not give us more than N120 million for over head annually. This money cannot pay cost of power for 3 months. ABU Zaria has 50,000 students with half of them living on campus that the school has to provide power and water for.

An undergraduate pays not more than N25,000 as charged for a year and they want to take a degree that is equivalent to that of Oxford. Let's face the fact, is that realistic? And the government that tells them not to pay at the first place does not pay the balance.

A degree is a product, how much does it take to produce a graduate? How much are students paying? How much is the balance and who will pay the balance? If you don't pay the balance, that person will get a degree equivalent to whatever available money is there, there is no miracle about it. That is why the standards are falling.

Let us not deceive ourselves. There is a cost for everything. If you don't bear the cost you take less. We go for China products but the Chinese products will only last for certain number of years. But if you buy a superior product it lasts longer.

There is no funding in the Nigerian system except the few good private schools we have around. There is no funds to do research, the lectures use their small salaries to do research in order to create knowledge to help society.

In Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, we have 2,800 academic staffs to carter for 50,000 students. If you do a simple arithmetic you will know the students teachers ratio and it is not encouraging.

In as much as we want to be seen to be producing quality graduates, the investment is essential and necessary. The Nigerian government certainly is not investing as much as it should in education. In the 2017 budget proposals presented by President Muhammadu Buhari N448,01 billion was allocated to education representing about 6 percent of the N7.30 trillion budget, contrary to the recommendation by UNESCO. We must invest, if we don't invest you will never see quality products. Invests what you in want how can you give universities pittance to produce the same graduates that you pay $12,000 pounds to train. The more we train substantial number of them drift away because if you train somebody, it is not even fair on the person not to have working tools, that person will either leave the country or stay waste. This is a big deal.

If the educational system is not restructured, nobody will come from China, USA, Germany to Nigeria to either study, embark on an academic research or even intervene by paying the cost of university, and worst of all a lot of universities are being opened when we have a lot that are not funded, as Nigerians will say, “double wahala for dead bodi”.

If Almighty ABU, the giant in the sub-Saharan is challenged with manpower, just imagine what other universities are facing. We deceive ourselves that our universities are not ranking properly and I ask if you are to rank the national assemblies against other assemblies in the world, will they rank high? Definitely No!!! You cannot remove the universities from the nation, let us all put our hands on deck and urge the government to pay attention to the educational system and make our universities great again.
