Following the 30 days ultimatum given by the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), for the 19 Northern states to embark on a nationwide strike action, teachers in Adamawa state have been called upon to go about their normal duties while awaiting further directive from the union.

Comrade Rodney Nathan, state chairman of the NUT who made the disclosure while addressing newsmen in Yola maintained that the 30 days ultimatum as directed at the NEC meeting of the union in Ibadan remain sacrosanct though the ultimatum elapsed yesterday 17th July, 2017, the state chapter is yet to receive any notice to proceed on an industrial action.

According to him, Adamawa is one of the 19 northern states that was having the problem before the notice, Adamawa has to hear from the national and likewise, the national has to hear from Adamawa before any action is taken.

“When opportunity is given, you as a leader cannot go with emotion, you need to settle down to think within the said period and decide the next line of action,” he stated.

Rodney further disclosed that Adamawa teachers still have 5-month salary arrears which according to him is a good reason to embark on strike, but you only embark on an industrial action when there is a total failure of negotiation between the government and the people.

“When the government is ready to talk and listen to you, you have no option, since they are talking we will listen and given then the benefit of doubt,” the unionist stressed.

He pointed out that there is understanding between the union and the state government, hoping that very soon something will be done but stressed that “we will be set for a showdown should there be a breakdown. “
